A little history

Yin Yoga (यिन योग) was developed in the late 1970s by martial arts expert and yoga teacher Paulie Zink, and later shaped into the form we know today by teachers Paul Grilley and Sarah Powers.

Drawing from ancient Chinese Taoist philosophy, it focuses on the deeper connective tissues of the body — the ligaments, joints and fascia that most forms of exercise simply don’t reach.

It is a practice rooted in patience, stillness and the understanding that some things can only open when you stop trying to force them.

Yin Yoga with experienced teachers

If you are someone who finds it hard to slow down, or whose body feels stiff, tight and reluctant to move freely, Yin Yoga could be a quiet revelation. Poses are held for anywhere between three and five minutes, giving your deeper tissues the time they genuinely need to soften and release.

It is a practice of surrender rather than effort — and for many people, that makes it one of the most challenging and most rewarding things they have ever done.

  • The long, unhurried holds create space in the joints and connective tissues that faster styles of movement simply cannot reach
  • It is a deeply meditative practice, training your mind to sit with stillness and discomfort in a way that builds real inner resilience over time
  • Yin works beautifully alongside more active yoga styles or exercise, balancing the body and helping to prevent the stiffness and tightness that builds up over time
